Chris & Megan are two young doctors who purchased their new home in Princes Hill just before the COVID pandemic hit. They are hoping to transform their home for their future family. Given the small site, they are looking for some guidance in their renovation plans to maximise the space, layout & natural light.
We would love for this property to become a family home! We’re hoping for a second storey extension to be built to convert the current property to a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom family home, with an upstairs master having an ensuite and possibly a study/breakout area! It is a small block so we are looking for a solution to maximise the space, centralise the bathroom and have an open plan kitchen/living which flows onto the courtyard at the rear. The block has a south facing courtyard so any maximisation of northern light where possible would be excellent!

We have decided to flip the addition to the rear of the site, proposing a north facing living zone that will attract a lot of natural light. Normally, double storey forms at the rear of the property would not be preferred due to the impact of surrounding properties, however in this instance, it would lessen the overshadowing to surrounding homes.
The master bedroom and its amenities would sit above the main living space with a north-eastern aspect and a view over the central courtyard. By separating the addition from the original heritage building, we promote the existence and significance of the original heritage building. Also, by creating a central courtyard, we reduce the depth of the corridor and as a result, create more light in the centre of the house and space for a study.
Overall, we think this property has a lot of potential to create something beautiful and truly unique whilst adhering to the sites contextual constraints, heritage sensitivities and planning policies.
