About

A family of four (plus Barney the dog) looking for possible opportunities for their family beach house in Sorrento. Arthur and his family are looking to start fresh with a new design, so they can stop dreaming about the possibilities and have a professional realise a clever design that can become a beautiful home.

Brief

We love that this is our old beach house and we always have great times there. The deck and garden are great to relax and entertain, however the home is poorly designed, gets very cold in winter and hot in the summer, and can become quite crowded when we have family over to stay.

The orientation of the home is great and gets lots of sun, however there seems to be a dip in the middle of the site that could be a challenge.

We would like to maximise energy efficiency with clever design and material use, and take advantage of a great block and landscaped front garden. We’d love to add an additional bedroom as a ‘flexi room’ that could act as a bedroom with bunk beds but also a play room for the kids.

Architectural Statement

Working with the topography of the site, the ground floor encompasses a 2-car garage and separate ‘flexi-room’, to be used as a somewhat self-contained guest suite or rumpus room.

A longer linear form incorporates larger indoor and outdoor living spaces, with the elevated living room overlooking the recently landscaped front garden. Behind the new central kitchen there is a laundry, main bathroom and two secondary bedrooms.

To the north, a grassed open courtyard is edged with decking, separating the outdoor living area and master bedroom suite. Bordering the courtyard is a long rectangular swimming pool with a waterfall-edge at the north-west end, connecting down a level with the garden below next to the ‘flexi-room’.

By re-orienting the living spaces and consolidating the building form, together with the inclusion of in-ground water tanks, we hope this house can become a comfortable, energy efficient home that Arthur, Louise and their family will be able to enjoy and host friends and family in year-round.
