James and Alex are looking for an update to their double-fronted Victorian home in Malvern that they share with their two young children, Gus and Skye. As a builder, James is used to building other people’s dream homes, and is now looking forward to seeing what he can build for his own family!
James and Alex are hoping to transform their home to create more functional spaces for their family, and knock down the old 80s extension at the rear of the property to add a new, open plan space overlooking a courtyard and swimming pool.
Our house has four bedrooms at the front of the house which we would like to retain, however, transform them into more usable spaces for our family, including a sitting room and a master bedroom with an ensuite. We’d like to add a studio out the back, connected to the house via a hall along the boundary, creating a central courtyard with a pool and spa.
As it is a south-facing block, a double-height open plan back room with high-level north-facing windows would be awesome! A couple of other features we would love to be included are a wood-burning fireplace in the main living room, a mud room, and potentially a car-pit/stacker at the rear (if that helps with space). A lot to fit in a little(ish) block!

After years of crafting their clients dream houses, James and Alex are looking for some inspiration to renovate their own idyllic home for their family. Creating more functional spaces for the family were key to the new design, with a focus on incorporating a master suite, an open plan kitchen and living space overlooking a courtyard with a pool, and a studio at the rear.
The design to extend the current Victorian house sees the front façade unchanged, keeping with the character for the street. The front bedrooms have been updated and altered to include a Master suite, as well as a re-configuration of the family bathroom.
At the end of this hall, a large full height pivot door marks the threshold between old and new. Beyond this door a long wall of glass is the only thing that separates the kitchen, dining and living from the outdoor area. Designed as an entertaining patio with a BBQ and swimming pool, the space makes the most of the northern aspect, and the swimming pool bounded by the house minimises the pool fencing.
Maximising space on the site, there is an integrated car-stacker for off-street parking. A dramatic high vaulted ceiling with a central skylight creates a grounded multi-functional space at the rear of the site, serviced by an additional bathroom, to be used as a secondary living space, guest room, or even an office space for those working from home days.
