DESIGN INITIATIVE 06

Love the current layout of the house with an open plan kitchen and living, high ceilings, an open fireplace in the front room and original features throughout the house.
The house lacks space throughout, without much storage in the bathroom, laundry and bedrooms, and we dislike the look of the kitchen and living area at the back.
Ideally, we would love to re-do the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, and include built-in-wardrobes in each bedroom. We’d also like to expand the home if possible by adding a second storey with a large master bedroom and ensuite, and hopefully some extra storage space.

Already enjoying the open plan living and kitchen area of this little Victorian row house in North Melbourne, the design challenge was to add an extra bedroom to make three in total, and to arrange the working and wet areas more efficiently.
By shaving off a section of the North facing courtyard toward the middle of the site and extending the footprint to the boundary to accommodate some of the new kitchen, the bathroom can be rearranged and this allows a stairwell to be inserted for circulation to the second level master bedroom with ensuite. The open stair inhabits a double height void, with glazing to the northern mini courtyard and acts as a well to draw light into the centre of the house.
The rear living spaces are updated, replacing the timber framed windows from the early 90’s renovation to steel or aluminium to allow the living and dining area to borrow space from the courtyard in the warmer months. Simple strategies like keeping materials to a minimum and continuous flooring throughout helps to make this house feel more spacious.
